HARRISBURG – A “cool” new recreational opportunity is a step closer to becoming a reality in Johnstown, according to state Rep. Jim Rigby (R-Johnstown).
“The Alternative Community Resource Program (ACRP) already does a tremendous job providing recreational opportunities in Cambria County and the surrounding area,” said Rigby. “I congratulate them on being awarded financial support that will allow them to do that job even better.”
ACRP has received an $85,000 grant through the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) Community Conservation Partnerships Program that will allow them to construct a splash park on the site of their Cambria City facility on Chestnut St.
“This will be a tremendous addition to downtown Johnstown, especially considering the nearest place for kids to go swimming is more than ten miles away,” Rigby added. “The project is scheduled to begin sometime next year on what is already a historical site, having housed St. Columba Church which was built in 1888 and helped the neighborhood survive the Johnstown flood a year later.
“Who knows…maybe it will be here in time for summer?”
The DCNR Recreation and Conservation grant program is funded with a variety of state and federal funding sources, including the Keystone Recreation, Park and Conservation Fund (Key 93), which includes Key-Community and Key-Land Trust; the Environmental Stewardship Fund; the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund; Pennsylvania Trails Fund; Pennsylvania Heritage Area Program; and the ATV Restricted Management Account Fund.
