Rigby to Share Scholarship Information with Area Educators
1/11/2023
HARRISBURG – Rep. Jim Rigby (R-Cambria/Somerset) has invited principals, superintendents and guidance counselors representing schools in the 71st District to learn about the Army Reserve Minuteman Scholarship on Friday, Jan. 13, at 9 a.m. at Penn Highlands Community College in the LGI Conference Room on the Richland Campus.

Representatives from the U.S. Army, U.S. Army Reserve, PA Army National Guard, U.S. Army Reserve ROTC, U.S. Marines Corp, U.S. Air Force, and U.S. Navy will be on hand to present information about the Minuteman Scholarship, which covers full tuition and fees or $10,000 per year toward room and board at any college or university served by an Army (ROTC) program. Scholarship recipients also receive a yearly book allowance of $1,200 and a monthly stipend of $420 while attending a school enrolled in the ROTC program.

Retired Army LTC Craig Minnick will also share information about the Buchan Scholarship and a new program for veteran speakers through the Conemaugh Valley Veterans.

“This is an excellent scholarship opportunity,” said Rigby. “As the father of a child who entered the military, I wish I had been aware of this program at the time. There are many scholarship programs available for students to help alleviate the high cost of higher education, we just need to make sure students and families are aware of them and how to apply.”

Minuteman Scholarship recipients must serve in the Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP), in which they participate in an Army Reserve or National Guard unit’s monthly drills and a 14-day annual training for which they are paid as an E-5/sergeant. After graduation and commissioning, Minuteman Scholarship recipients are guaranteed placement in the U.S. Army Reserve.
